Where are you on the technology spectrum?

Thing 23!

Whew! This was a tough course for me. I considered myself an old dog and technology challenged. I didn't like doing some of the new things for the 23 Things class in the beginning, because I was nervous and wasn't sure how I'd use them. I think I worked harder at making excuses on why they weren't useful, the district limitations, and the problems the students would have, when in fact these were MY fears and limitations.

I can honestly say I LOVED making the wiki, I used the google docs to share my student information with my teammate and principal, and I'm starting to really get into the use of a blog.

I'm going to now create a REAL blog for my class. I'm going to post my daily assignments on it, and open communications links to my students and parents. It upset me when I was viewing the podcasts, wikis, etc. and I saw the dates of 2006. I feel like this is such new technology, but it's been around a long time.

Kathy, is it possible to keep using the WSD 23 Things information after March 1? I'm ready to take the next step now and create my classroom blog, but feel I still need the support.

I know I'm still an old dog in that I missed not having a class where I could talk about what I'm doing. Websharing isn't the same for me.

My commitment is to myself and new technology is 1) Make my Mrs. John classroom blog, 2) figure out how to make a slide cast and update it weekly for my vocabulary lessons. My future commitment is to create a wiki to go with a SS unit for next year.

Thanks, Kathy, for this opportunity to learn some really cool technology that will enhance my teaching!

OMG! This is terrific! I think that having a weeking wiki would be so incredible. Try it! http://grammarfunwithmrsjohn.wikispaces.com/

I see blogs as more of an informational tool and a wiki as a learning and assesment tool.

Thing 21

I LOVE wikis. I found a great one called "Learning Latin America" done by a group of 9th graders on wikispaces. They used this wiki as their 4th quarter project. It includes information on the geography, history, culture, and current events of Latin America. Each of the 80 students added to this wiki using maps, links, and learing opportunities including Smart board and computer challenges. It was done in 2007. I better get moving!

Thing 20

I subscribed to Grammar Girl on iTunes. It's appropriate for a middle school LA class. It even comes with silly sentences. I am not sure how to embed it in my blog... with a link? I'm going to go back and try again.

Thing 19

I was listening to podcasts on epnweb because it was safest to use in the classroom, but I found most of them to sound boring and be mundane. I am going to try to do a podcast with my slideshare and make a slidecast. I hope I sound more exciting than the ones I listened to!

Thing 18

This is a podcast for ELL students...The first one is on "get" and "got"

ESL Aloud

Thing 14

Delicious is tricky for me. I downloaded an ELL clip but somehow I didn't do something correct. I can still see it and get to it, but... I'll keep playing!

Thing 13

It will be convenient to have the social bookmarks rather than using favorites and being tied down to one machine.

Thing 12

It's fun to see other people's blogs. I love Karen's blog and I got some great ideas off of it! Muy Bien, Senorita!

Thing 7

Flickr was easy and I'll use it often.

Thing 5

I had a lot of trouble with the RSS. I know it's something that I will use often once I use it more and am more comfortable. I'll keep trying.

Thing 18

Each Week we will have a new list of vocabulary words. Click here for this weeks words!

Thing 17

I checking the various organizers out, I tried bubbl, 30 boxes, and knowtes. They might come in handy. Knowtes didn't work :-(

Google docs is going to be really cool with my writer's workshop. I am going to upload my spreadsheet that I have to share with my team members and principal each marking period. Carly and I can update it at the same time instead of sending it back and forth! GREAT!

Which one sounds like more fun to you?

Just like a puppy grows quickly, so does my techie fun!

I have been having both frustration and fun with this new technology. I LOVED this one! You'll die when you see how fast this dog grows...just like new technology!

I hope you enjoy this!

Thing 9

I have only used YouTube for music videos but I was surprised at the topics on YouTube! Unfortunately, you know we can't use them at school ... grrrrrrrrrr!

I'm looking at this dog and getting really nervous! My puppy is growing by leaps and bounds. My what big paws you have! It's kind of like my students and their interest in technology -- growing exponentially! I learned three new techie words today -- "netiquette", "cyber native", and "cyber immigrant".

Thing 4

I see how to post now! I like the idea of bloglines. I was wondering how I would ever manage 60 blogging students! Bloglines looks fairly simple. Now on to adding blogs!
I can see how blogs will be great to communicate with students outside of the classroom. Also, I like the idea of a blog to help teach new concepts for students. With various students comments, the new concept can be explained by different students.
